The lakes of the Landes region present an ideal profile for pike fly fishing. Their shallow depth makes it easy to fish with a streamer, and the pike density is high. Come and discover this approach to predator fishing in a dream setting.
Pike on the fly, an addictive fishing method
Pike is the favorite freshwater predator of the French. However, it is a fish that can be particularly moody, and succeeding on each outing is a real challenge. Indeed, it feeds in phases and remains at rest for long periods. You must therefore arm yourself with patience to hope to cross paths with this sport fish, but the game is worth the candle. I started pike fly fishing in the Landes in 2008, and since then the virus has never left me. It was after catching my first pike on a streamer that I started fishing almost exclusively with a fly, whatever fish I was looking for. Every early autumn for over 15 years, I have left the rivers of the Basque Country for the Landes lakes in search of master esox. Year after year, I have specialized in this streamer fishing, and I offer to share my experience and my addiction to this approach.
Pike on the fly, learning to cast streamers
For a beginner, pike casting does not differ from the traditional cast used for trout, but we use more powerful equipment relative to the size of the predator fish. Casting can be acquired during a day of specific training. Keep in mind that it is not necessary to cast 25 cm streamers 25 m to catch a pike on the fly, especially by boat or float tube! For more advanced anglers, I suggest working on additional line pulls that will allow you to gain ease and distance.
Equipment for pike fly fishing: rods, reel, line

The equipment for fly fishing for pike has evolved considerably in recent years in Europe, thanks to emblematic fishermen who have created specific ranges. I am thinking in particular of the Swede Niklaus Bauer and the Finnish brand Vision, or Paolo Piaccharini, the inventor of the famous “Wiggle tails”. Today, the rod actions and line tapers are particularly studied to facilitate the casting of voluminous flies at a good distance. During the course, you will have at your disposal sets that I have specially selected for their comfort in fishing action, regardless of your level. I can also advise and guide you in choosing the right equipment.
Pike flies
Pike flies are actually imitations of fish, but they can also imitate frogs or crayfish. These streamers mimic the prey that pike feed on throughout the seasons. They are made of hair, feathers and synthetic materials which, once submerged, are very mobile and reproduce the fine vibrations that pike pick up to locate their targets. The tying of pike flies has also evolved considerably in the last 20 years thanks to the development of synthetic fibers. The dynamism of Musky fishing (pike’s cousin) in North America and pike fishing in Scandinavia has given a real boost to the first rabbit streamer from the 80s or the Pikers point in bucktail (deer tail) from Guido Vinck. Today, the streamer tier has a multitude of materials and accessories to give different swims to his creations. We therefore now have “Jerkfly”, “tube flies” or articulated streamers that allow us to diversify fishing actions. Throughout the day, I will recommend the models to use and we will discover together their specific characteristics depending on the fishing conditions (wind, light, location, activity, season).
The fishing action: the animations of pike streamers
In fishing action, it will be necessary to vary the animations to trigger pike attacks. The animations correspond to the different ways of retrieving the line to bring the fly to life under water. With more or less long and rhythmic pulls, the streamer is animated by seeking the combination that will provoke the strike. There are standard animations from reservoir fishing such as the rolly polly. We will review them and I will guide you on the strategy to put in place in order to fish methodically and hope to find the solution of the day.

Fly fishing for pike can be an opportunity for trout fly fishermen who wish to continue fishing during the closed season. It will also be suitable for the sport lure fisherman who wants to diversify his approach and combine the art of fly casting with the adrenaline of fighting these powerful predators.
